What Is the Best Time to Move in Florida?

Your priorities decide the best time to move in Florida. Here’s how the calendar sorts out locally:

What matters mostBest windowWhy
The lowest priceOctober through AprilmoveBuddha reports rates 20% to 30% higher from May through September
Cool, dry weatherNovember through AprilHighs in the 70s and about 2 to 3 inches of rain a month
Low storm riskDecember through MayOutside hurricane season, which runs June 1 to November 30
Light trafficLate October to mid-December, and MayBefore and after the snowbird months
Kids changing schoolsJune or JulyManatee schools started August 10 in 2026

Put those together and late October to early December wins. Late April and early May come second: still dry, still before the price peak, with the snowbirds heading north.

Why Is Summer the Most Expensive Time to Move?

Demand. School is out, leases turn over and families want to settle before the first bell. moveBuddha reports local moving rates 20% to 30% higher from May through September, on weekends and in the last days of each month.

For a local two-bedroom move that moveBuddha prices at about $962, that’s roughly $190 to $290 more in peak season. That’s simple math on its averages, not a quote.

If you have to move in summer, take a weekday in the middle of the month. It’s the cheapest slot in the most expensive season.

How Does Hurricane Season Change Your Move?

It adds risk to six months of the year and real risk to about two. The National Hurricane Center places most activity between mid-August and mid-October.

Three things can go wrong:

  • The move date. A storm watch can cancel a crew or close the bridges to Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key.
  • The closing. When a tropical storm or hurricane watch or warning is issued for any part of Florida, insurers stop writing new policies. Citizens Property Insurance calls this a binding suspension. No new policy can mean no closing.
  • Your belongings. A truck or a garage full of boxes is the wrong place to ride out a storm.

How to plan for it:

  • Leave a few days of slack between the closing and the move.
  • Ask the mover how it handles a storm delay, in writing, before you sign.
  • Line up short-term storage in case the new home isn’t ready.
  • Lock in homeowners insurance well before a storm forms.

What About the Heat and Afternoon Storms?

Plan the day around them. August highs average 91.5°F, and summer storms build in the afternoon.

  • Start at 7 a.m. The crew loads the heavy pieces before the worst heat.
  • Cover the walkway. Lay down floor protection and keep towels by the door for wet shoes and wet boxes.
  • Keep water and the air conditioning running at both homes for the crew and for you.
  • Move electronics and photos in your car. A closed truck in August gets hotter than a living room.
  • Watch for lovebugs. UF/IFAS says they swarm mainly in May and September. Wash them off the car before the sun bakes them on.

When Does Bradenton Get Crowded?

January through April. Seasonal residents fill the roads, the island bridges back up by late morning and some condo buildings limit move days.

Two events add to it:

  • Spring training. The Pittsburgh Pirates played 16 home games at LECOM Park in 2026, from February 22 to March 23.
  • Snowbird traffic. A 2026 Resident.com guide puts the southbound rush in October through December and the northbound rush in February through April.

None of this raises local moving rates the way summer does. It costs you clock time instead. On an hourly move, an extra hour in traffic or at a drawbridge is an extra hour on the bill. See our snowbird page for seasonal moves.

What Is the Best Day and Time of Day to Move?

A Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday in the middle of the month, starting early.

  • Avoid the last days of the month. That’s when leases end and rates run higher.
  • Avoid weekends if your dates are flexible.
  • Start in the morning. It beats the heat, the storms and the island bridge traffic.
  • Check the bridge times. The Anna Maria Island and Cortez bridges open for boats at a quarter past and a quarter to the hour in daytime.

How Far Ahead Should You Book?

Earlier than you think, in peak season. moveBuddha suggests four to six weeks ahead for a local move from October through April, and six to eight weeks in summer.

Long hauls need more lead time. moveBuddha suggests 8 to 12 weeks for a cross-country move in peak season. See long distance movers.

Is the Best Time Different for Families, Retirees or Military?

It can be. Each group has a deadline of its own.

WhoThe date to plan aroundRead more
Families with school-age kidsThe first day of school, August 10 in 2026Moving with kids
New full-time residentsFlorida homestead: live in the home by January 1Moving to Bradenton
SnowbirdsBefore hurricane season if you’re closing up for summerSnowbirds
Military familiesPCS peak season, May 15 to August 31Military families

The homestead date matters more than most people expect. A move in the fall lets you file by March 1 for that year’s tax break. A move in January waits a full year.
