Moving With Kids: A Plan for Parents in Bradenton and Manatee County

The truck is the easy part. The hard part is the six-year-old who won’t sleep in the new room, the teenager who says you’ve ruined their life and the school office that wants a form you left in Ohio. Call +1 (941) 392-6022. Bradenton Mover Line connects you with an independent mover in Manatee County, so you can spend move week on the kids instead of the boxes.

This page is a plan in order: telling them, picking the date, enrolling them in school, packing their rooms, getting through move day and settling in.

Calls may be recorded. We may be paid when we connect your call. You pay us nothing.

When Should You Tell the Kids, and What Should You Say?

Early, and plainly. The American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry calls a move “one of the most stress-producing experiences a family faces.” Its guide for parents lists what helps:

  • Explain clearly why the family is moving.
  • Show them the new area with maps and photos.
  • Point out the things they’ll like there.
  • Let them help plan their new room.
  • Help them stay in touch with old friends by phone, letters and visits.

Tell them what stays the same too: the family, the pets, the bedtime story, the stuffed animal that goes everywhere.

How Do Kids React at Different Ages?

Each age struggles in its own way. This table pulls from the AACAP guide and the American Academy of Pediatrics’ sleep advice:

AgeWhat you may seeWhat helps
Babies and toddlersBroken sleep and fussing when routines slipKeep naps, meals and bedtime on the same clock
Kindergarten and first gradeClinging to parents againExtra time together and a calm first week
School ageWorry about friends and a new classA school visit before the first day
TeensProtests, anger, asking to stay behindA real say in the plan and a way to keep friends

AACAP adds that peer groups matter more as kids get older, so teens take moves harder. For a high school senior, it suggests thinking about letting them finish the year where they are, with a trusted family.

When Is the Best Time to Move With Kids?

Between school years, if you can. A 2016 study in the journal Child Development followed 19,162 children from kindergarten through eighth grade. Boston College researchers found each extra move was linked to lower reading and math scores and weaker social skills. Changing schools had slightly stronger ties to those skills than changing homes alone.

So the school calendar matters more than the house calendar. Manatee County students went back to class on August 10 for the 2026 to 2027 year, ABC7 Sarasota reported. A move in late June or July gives time to enroll, find the bus stop and tour the school.

Summer has a cost. moveBuddha reports moving rates 20% to 30% higher from May through September, on weekends and at the end of the month. A weekday move in mid-July can trim that.

What Do Florida Schools Need to Enroll Your Child?

Four things, under Florida’s school entry rules. The Florida Department of Health lists them on its school enrollment page:

DocumentWhat counts
Proof of ageA birth certificate or passport
Proof of residenceOfficial papers showing the parent or guardian lives in the district
Immunization recordFlorida form DH 680, issued by a Florida doctor
Physical examDone within 12 months before school entry, on form DH 3040 or the doctor’s own copy

Coming from another state? Get a copy of your child’s medical history and full shot record before you leave. The DH 680 is a Florida form, so a Florida pediatrician has to issue it, and new patient appointments can take time to book.

To find your zoned school, call the School District of Manatee County at (941) 708-8770 or use its school locator.

What Happens to an IEP When You Move?

It follows your child. Under federal special education rules, 34 CFR 300.323, a new school must provide services comparable to the old IEP when a child transfers during the school year.

  • Moving within Florida. The new district gives comparable services until it adopts the old IEP or writes a new one.
  • Moving from another state. Comparable services continue until the new district evaluates your child, if it decides to, and writes a new IEP.

Bring a paper copy of the IEP and the latest evaluation. Don’t wait for the old school to send records.

How Do You Pack a Kid’s Room?

Last out, first in. Pack the children’s rooms on the final night, and set them up first at the new house.

  • Sort first. Donate outgrown clothes and toys before the packing starts. Every box you skip is one less to carry and one less to open.
  • Let them help. Kids can decorate and label their own boxes.
  • Keep the comfort items out. The lovey, the blanket and the nightlight ride in your car, not the truck.
  • Make an open-first box for each child: sheets, pajamas, a favorite book, a few toys and a toothbrush.
  • Bag the hardware. Crib and bunk bed bolts go in a labeled bag taped to the frame.

For a baby, plan the first night’s sleep before you move. Military OneSource, citing AAP guidance, says to set up sleep arrangements before moving and to bring a portable crib that meets AAP standards. Keep it bare: a firm mattress and a fitted sheet only.

What Should Kids Do on Moving Day?

Stay out of the path, or have a job. Moving with kids on the big day means running two jobs at once.

A truck ramp, an open front door and furniture on dollies don’t mix with a four-year-old. Book a sitter or a grandparent for little ones, or trade babysitting with a neighbor for the day.

Older kids do better with a job:

  • Guarding the open-first boxes
  • Checking each room is empty before the truck leaves
  • Taking photos of the old house for a memory book
  • Handing out water to the crew

Pack a day bag for each child: snacks, a charged tablet, a change of clothes, medicine and the comfort item. If the move is long distance, add car games and a plan for the hotel night.

How Do You Help Kids Settle In After the Move?

Routine first, then the town. Moving with kids doesn’t end when the truck pulls away.

Make the beds the first night, even if nothing else is unboxed. Keep mealtimes and bedtime on the old schedule for the first weeks. Small things that feel normal matter more than a finished kitchen.

Then explore. The Manatee County Public Library has seven locations, including the Central Library downtown, Braden River, Lakewood Ranch, Palmetto, Rocky Bluff in Ellenton, South Manatee and the Island Branch in Holmes Beach. A library card is a quick win for a new kid. Sign them up for a team, club or scout group soon after the move, as AACAP suggests.

When Should You Worry?

AACAP lists the signs to watch for: changes in appetite, pulling away from others, a drop in grades, irritability and trouble sleeping. Some unsettled weeks are normal. If the signs last, ask your pediatrician for a referral to a child and adolescent psychiatrist or counselor.

How Can Movers Make a Move With Kids Easier?

By taking the jobs that pull you away from the kids. Three services help most:

ServiceWhat it saves you
Packing servicesWeeks of evenings with a tape gun
Full-service moversPacking, the move and the unpacking in one booking
Short-term storageA place for furniture when the new house isn’t ready

Ask the crew to take apart and rebuild cribs and bunk beds. moveBuddha’s disassembly guide says full-service movers include basic disassembly in the hourly rate. Confirm it on the estimate.

More Questions From Parents

Should Kids Help Pack?

Yes, for their own rooms. Choosing what to keep and decorating the boxes gives them some control over a change they didn’t pick. Keep them away from the kitchen and anything breakable.

Is It Better to Move During the School Year or in Summer?

Summer, for school. The 2016 Child Development study found school changes had slightly stronger ties to reading and math than home changes alone. If you must move mid-year, try to time it with a natural break, like winter break.

What About Military Families Moving on Orders?

PCS moves follow their own rules, from weight allowances to lease breaks. See our page for military families. Moving with kids on orders works best with the school records in hand before the truck is loaded.
