Is Bradenton a Good Place to Live?

For people who want the Gulf, warm winters and no state income tax, yes. For people who hate heat, storms or high insurance bills, think hard.

The city is growing. The Census Bureau counted 55,698 residents in 2020 and estimated 58,014 by July 2025. The county around it grew faster, by 17.1% over the same stretch.

What newcomers like:

  • Beaches at Coquina, Manatee Public Beach and Bean Point on Anna Maria Island
  • The Bradenton Riverwalk and the Village of the Arts downtown
  • No state income tax in Florida
  • Winter highs in the low 70s

What takes getting used to:

  • Summer heat and afternoon storms from June through September
  • Hurricane season and the insurance that comes with it
  • Winter traffic, when seasonal residents fill the roads and the island bridges

What Does It Cost to Live Here?

Housing is the big number, and insurance is the surprise.

The city’s median home value runs well below the county’s recent sale prices, because the newer, larger homes are out east in Lakewood Ranch and Parrish. Older block homes in the city cost less.

Why Is Home Insurance So High Here?

Storms. Insurance Business reported in April 2026 that Floridians pay about 181% more than the national average, at $8,292 a year on average.

Two tips before you buy:

  • Get insurance quotes before your inspection period ends. A great price on a house means less if the policy costs double what you planned.
  • Ask about flood coverage separately. Standard homeowners policies don’t cover flooding. Check the flood zone of any address before you make an offer.

Is There a Tax Break for Living Here Full Time?

Yes. Florida’s homestead exemption takes up to $50,000 off a home’s assessed value. The Florida Department of Revenue says the home must be your permanent residence by January 1, and you apply with the county property appraiser by March 1.

Which Neighborhood Fits You?

Pick by how you live, not just by price. Many people moving to Bradenton FL choose between the older west side and the newer east side.

What Is the Weather Like, and What About Hurricanes?

Warm all year, hot and wet in summer. The National Weather Service’s 1991 to 2020 normals for the area’s airport show:

MonthAverage highAverage low
January72.5°F52.3°F
August91.5°F75.3°F

The airport averages 49.05 inches of rain a year. June through September bring 29.55 inches of it, or about 60%. Expect afternoon storms in summer.

Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30. Hurricanes Helene and Milton both hit the area in 2024, and Anna Maria Island and Bradenton Beach took the worst of the flooding. Before you sign a lease or buy, know your evacuation zone and your flood zone.

Where Do People Work, and How Long Is the Commute?

Most commutes are short. The Census Bureau puts the average at 25.2 minutes.

A January 2026 guide from a local homebuilder lists Manatee Memorial Hospital, the School District of Manatee County, Tropicana Brands Group, Bealls and local government among the area’s major employers.

Some residents commute to Tampa or St. Petersburg. Tampa is about an hour up I-75 at rush hour, and St. Petersburg is across the Sunshine Skyway on I-275. The airport, SRQ, sits on the county line, a short trip from most of the city.

What About Schools and Colleges?

Manatee County public schools started the 2026 to 2027 year on August 10, ABC7 Sarasota reported. Find your zoned school through the School District of Manatee County at (941) 708-8770.

What Should You Do in Your First 30 Days?

Florida sets deadlines for new residents. The Florida Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles new resident page lists the main two:

  • Driver license. Get a Florida license within 30 days of becoming a resident.
  • Vehicle title and registration. Title and register your vehicles within 10 days of becoming a resident. Starting a job or enrolling a child in public school counts as becoming a resident.

You’ll need Florida car insurance from a Florida-licensed agent first, and the vehicle’s VIN has to be inspected.

The rest of the list:

  • Set up power, water and trash before move-in day
  • File the homestead exemption by March 1, if you own and live in the home by January 1
  • Register to vote at your new address
  • Get a Manatee County library card. There are seven branches, from Holmes Beach to Lakewood Ranch.
