Military Movers in Florida: PCS, PPM and Retirement Moves From Bradenton
Bradenton isn’t a base town, but the military is never far off. The Census Bureau counts 31,972 veterans in Manatee County. Coast Guard Station Cortez answers calls off Bradenton Beach, and MacDill Air Force Base is across Tampa Bay. Call +1 (941) 392-6022. Bradenton Mover Line connects you with an independent mover for the parts of a military move you arrange yourself.
That last part matters. A government-booked household goods shipment goes through your transportation office and an approved carrier. This page covers everything else: PPMs, off-base moves, lease breaks, storage and the retirement move.
Calls may be recorded. We may be paid when we connect your call. You pay us nothing.

Which Military Moves Can You Book Yourself?
Some, not all. The orders decide who books the truck.
| Your move | Who arranges it | Can you hire a local mover? |
|---|---|---|
| PCS with a government shipment | Your transportation office, through DPS | No. The government assigns the carrier. |
| PCS as a PPM | You, after counseling | Yes. Rent a truck, hire labor or hire a full crew. |
| Partial PPM | Both | Yes, for the part you move |
| Off-base move not on orders | You | Yes |
| Retirement or separation move | The government within time limits, or you as a PPM | Either |
| Storage while deployed | The transportation office, or you | Yes, for self-storage |
Start with the transportation office on any move tied to orders. Counseling comes first, and skipping it can cost you the reimbursement.
What Changed With Military Moves in 2026?
The system changed twice in a year. The Defense Department canceled the HomeSafe Alliance household goods contract on June 18, 2025, citing missed pickups and deliveries, and sent members back to the legacy DPS system. On May 1, 2026, a new Personal Property Activity became the permanent office in charge of military moves, Aerotech News reported.

How Does a PPM Work When You Hire Your Own Help?
You move your own goods and the government pays you an incentive. Most of the rules are about paperwork. A Coast Guard household goods notice sets out the core of it:
- Get authorized first. The transportation office issues a DD Form 2278 through DPS. Claims without one are generally not paid.
- Know the incentive. It’s up to 100% of what the government would have paid a contracted mover, within your weight allowance.
- Get certified weight tickets. One empty, one loaded, with your name, ID number and the vehicle on each. Without them, you’re paid actual costs only.
- Don’t use the government travel card. The notice says it’s prohibited for household goods moves, PPMs included.
- Plan for damage yourself. Full replacement value coverage may not come with a mover you hire, so claims go to that mover.
Keep every receipt. A March 2026 U-Pack guide lists mover invoices, packing supplies, fuel and tolls among the receipts to submit with your orders and forms.
How Much Can You Ship?
Your weight allowance is set by your grade and by dependents. These figures come from the Joint Travel Regulations table, as published by The Military Wallet citing USTRANSCOM:
| Grade | Without dependents | With dependents |
|---|---|---|
| E-3 and below | 5,000 pounds | 8,000 pounds |
| E-5 | 7,000 pounds | 9,000 pounds |
| E-7 | 11,000 pounds | 13,000 pounds |
| O-3 | 13,000 pounds | 14,500 pounds |
| O-6 and above | 18,000 pounds | 18,000 pounds |
Pro-gear is extra. Professional books, papers and equipment don’t count toward the allowance if they’re declared, and spouses get up to 500 pounds of their own. Weigh pro-gear apart from the rest.
Over the limit, the extra weight is on you. Sell or donate before the weigh, not after.
Should You Hire a Mover for a PPM?
It’s a trade between money and backs. Hiring a crew lowers what you keep from the incentive, but the crew’s invoice is a receipt you can submit.
A common split for military movers Florida families book on a PPM:
- You: rent the truck, pack the boxes and do the weigh-ins
- The crew: load the heavy furniture, wrap it and strap it in
Get the mover’s price in writing before move day. State law requires a signed estimate before any work starts.
Can You Break a Lease in Bradenton on PCS Orders?
Yes. Two laws protect you, and the state one ends the lease sooner for most renters.
Under Florida Statute 83.682, you can end a lease when PCS orders move you 35 miles or more from the rental:
- Give written notice that takes effect at least 30 days after the landlord gets it.
- Attach a copy of your orders or a letter signed by your commanding officer.
- You owe rent only up to the termination date, prorated. The statute says you aren’t liable for other rent or damages for leaving early.
- Temporary duty orders count too, if they send you 35 miles or more away for more than 60 days.
The federal Servicemembers Civil Relief Act also applies. The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Florida explains in its housing guide that under the SCRA, a monthly lease ends 30 days after the next rent due date. The same guide notes that most servicemembers leasing in this state can get out sooner under the state law.
Book the movers after the notice goes in, not before. This page is not legal advice. Your base legal assistance office can review the lease for free.
What Should Retirees Settling in Bradenton Know?
You have time, but the clock is running. A Navy household goods guide for retirees lays out the limits:
- Travel to your home of selection must be done within 3 years after active duty ends.
- Shipping rights expire 3 years after active duty ends.
- Non-temporary storage ends 1 year after active duty ends. The transportation office can extend it up to 180 days.
- Storage at the destination is limited to 90 days once you name a home of selection.
Confirm the limits with your branch. If you rent first and buy later in Lakewood Ranch, Parrish or West Bradenton, you move twice. Ask the transportation office which move your entitlement covers, and plan to book the other one yourself.
Which Bases Do Bradenton Families Move To and From?
The nearest ones are close enough for a local move.
| Base | Where | From Bradenton |
|---|---|---|
| Coast Guard Station Cortez | Cortez village, Manatee County | A short local move |
| MacDill Air Force Base | South Tampa | About 45 miles, over the Skyway or around on I-75 |
| Coast Guard Air Station Clearwater | St. Petersburg and Clearwater area | About 40 miles |
Moves to the Panhandle or the Atlantic side, such as Eglin, Hurlburt Field, NAS Pensacola, NAS Jacksonville or Patrick Space Force Base, stay inside Florida. The state moving law, Chapter 507, covers those, even across hundreds of miles. Ask military movers Florida families hire for those runs whether they hold a state registration. Moves out of state fall under federal rules.
Among military movers Florida families call, a long in-state haul is priced by weight or as a flat rate, not by the hour. Ask which one you’re getting.
How Do You Check a Mover Before a PPM?
You’re the customer on a PPM, not the government, so the checking is on you.
- State registration. A Florida mover shows its registration number on its ads and trucks.
- Federal numbers. A move out of state needs a USDOT number.
- A written, signed estimate. State law requires one before work starts.
- Coverage. The state minimum is 60 cents per pound per item, far less than replacement value.
- The deposit. The state Attorney General advises a small good-faith deposit, not a large one.
The verify a mover page shows how to look up each number.
What Happens When You Call About a Military Move?
- You call +1 (941) 392-6022 with your report date, both addresses and whether it’s a PPM.
- You say what you need: labor only, a full crew, packing or storage.
- The line connects you with one of the military movers Florida callers can look up by state registration number.
- The mover gives you a written estimate, which becomes a receipt for your PPM claim.
Bradenton Mover Line moves nothing, gives no prices and doesn’t book government shipments.
More Questions From Military Families
When Is PCS Peak Season?
May 15 through August 31, per the Coast Guard notice. Carriers book up fast then, and moveBuddha reports civilian moving rates 20% to 30% higher from May through September. Get counseling as soon as orders arrive.
Do Movers Give a Military Discount?
Some do. It isn’t required by any rule, so ask, and make sure the discount is written on the estimate. A discounted price with no signed estimate behind it isn’t worth much at the door.
Can a Mover Pack Only Part of a PPM?
Yes. Some families pack their own clothes and books and hire packers for the kitchen, the TVs and anything fragile. Partial packing is billed by the hour with many movers, and the invoice goes in with your other receipts. See packing services.
Where Can You Store Things During a Deployment?
Two ways. The transportation office arranges non-temporary storage when your orders allow it. Self-storage is the other route, at your own cost. In this heat, pick a climate-controlled unit. See climate-controlled storage.
