Snowbird Movers in Florida: Moving Between Your Bradenton Winter Home and Up North
A snowbird move is rarely a whole house. It’s a dresser from your daughter’s place in Ohio, the good recliner, a golf bag and twenty boxes, headed for a villa in Lakewood Ranch or a condo on Longboat Key. Call +1 (941) 392-6022. Bradenton Mover Line connects you with an independent mover that handles seasonal moves in Manatee County.
This page covers small shipments down I-75, getting the car here, closing up for summer and the extra steps for Canadians.

What Do Snowbirds Hire Movers For?
Five jobs, and each calls for a different kind of mover.
| The job | What to ask for | Where to read more |
|---|---|---|
| First load south to a new winter home | A partial load on a shared truck | Interstate movers |
| Closing up for summer | Local labor and climate-controlled storage | Climate-controlled storage |
| Downsizing from a house to a condo here | A local move | Small moves |
| Selling up north and staying full time | A full interstate household move | Senior moving |
| Shipping the car | An auto transport carrier | Car shipping |
Ask which part the mover handles itself. Some snowbird movers Florida callers reach do local work only, and some run long hauls too.
How Does a Small Shipment Get From Up North to Bradenton?
On a shared truck, in most seasonal moves. Your goods ride with other customers’ loads, and you pay for your share of the space.
The catch is the minimum. FreightWaves’ 2026 guide says many van lines set a minimum of about 1,000 to 2,500 pounds. Ship 600 pounds and you can still pay for 1,000.
| Option | Best for | The trade |
|---|---|---|
| Partial load on a van line | A few rooms of furniture | A delivery window of days, not one date |
| Portable container | Boxes and furniture you load yourself | You do the lifting at both ends |
| Your own vehicle | Clothes, golf clubs and small items | Space |
Plan on time. Allied Van Lines lists 5 to 14 days for trips over 1,000 miles, and New York and Chicago are each about 1,150 to 1,200 road miles from Bradenton. A shared truck sits at the long end, since the driver has other stops.
When Should You Book a Southbound or Northbound Move?
Early. A 2026 Resident.com guide puts the southbound rush in October through December and the northbound rush in February through April. It suggests starting to plan in August for an October move.
Ask snowbird movers Florida owners call for the delivery window as dates, in writing. If you’ll arrive after the truck, arrange for someone to let the crew in. On a Longboat Key condo, that’s the front desk. In an Ellenton park, tell the office the window so the truck is let through the gate.
How Do You Get the Car Down Here?
Three ways.
| Option | What it involves | Know this |
|---|---|---|
| Road trip | I-75 from the Midwest, or I-95 to I-4 from the Northeast | Two or three long days |
| Ship it | An open or enclosed carrier | Open costs less. Enclosed runs 55% to 85% more. |
| Amtrak Auto Train | Lorton, Virginia, to Sanford, Florida | About 855 miles overnight. Sanford is near Orlando, so you still face the trip to Bradenton. |
Resident.com puts car shipping at about $1,000 to $1,600 each way, and about $1,120 from New York off season. Prices climb in October and November going south and in February through April going north.
SGT Auto Transport lets owners pack up to 100 pounds of personal items in the trunk. Rules differ by carrier, so ask before you load it.
What Should You Do With the Home Over the Summer?
Close it up for heat and storms. Hurricane season runs June 1 to November 30, and you’ll be gone for all of it.
UF/IFAS, the University of Florida’s extension service, published a guide to closing your seasonal home in April 2026. Its main points:
- Set the air conditioning no higher than 85 degrees. Above that, indoor humidity can pass 55% to 60%.
- Turn off the water at the meter, unless it feeds the sprinklers.
- Turn off the water heater if you’ll be gone more than a month.
- Bring lanai and patio furniture inside.
- Arrange for someone to close the shutters if a storm threatens.
Some owners move furniture out for the summer instead, above all on the islands, where Helene and Milton flooded homes in 2024. SpareFoot listed climate-controlled units in Bradenton at about $78 a month for a 10 by 10 in August 2026. Read the storage policy. Flood and mold are excluded from many of them.
Call your insurer too. Resident.com notes that many homeowner policies limit coverage after a home sits empty 30 to 60 days.
What Do Condos, Parks and HOAs Ask of Movers?
Paperwork and timing. Most buildings here want three things before a truck shows up:
- A certificate of insurance. The mover sends it to the association office.
- An elevator reservation. Mid-rises book by time slot.
- Approved hours. Some buildings bar weekend moves in season.
Read the area page for yours: Longboat Key, Ellenton, Lakewood Ranch or Anna Maria Island.
What Changes for Canadian Snowbirds?
Registration. Since April 11, 2025, most non-citizens who stay in the U.S. more than 30 days must register with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. That includes Canadians who enter at a land border without an I-94 record. The form is G-325R, filed online. Fines run up to $5,000.
Household goods. Under federal rules, furniture and household effects you’ve used abroad for at least one year can enter free of duty, if they’re not for sale. The owner declares them on CBP Form 3299.
A load crossing the border needs a mover set up for customs. Ask snowbird movers Florida callers reach who files that paperwork before you book. This page is not legal or immigration advice.
What if You Decide to Stay Full Time?
Then it’s a full household move with a tax deadline.
The Florida Department of Revenue’s homestead guide says the home must be your permanent residence by January 1, and you file with the county property appraiser by March 1. The exemption is worth up to $50,000 off the assessed value. The appraiser can ask for a Florida driver license, voter registration or a declaration of domicile as proof.
So timing matters. Make Florida your permanent home before January 1, and you can file for that year’s exemption by March 1.

More Questions From Snowbirds
Can Movers Set Up the Home Before You Arrive?
Yes, if someone can let them in. A home watch service, a neighbor or the condo office can hold a key. Ask the crew to photograph each room when they finish, and have the association approve the date first.
Should You Move It or Buy It Again Here?
Move what’s hard to replace: heirlooms, art, a good mattress, family photos. Buy the rest here. With a minimum of 1,000 pounds or more on a shared truck, a few cheap pieces can cost more to ship than to buy new.
Do Movers Charge Less in Summer?
Not here. moveBuddha reports Bradenton rates 20% to 30% higher from May through September, the months most snowbirds spend up north. A local job in late April or early October can cost less.
